Inspiring Action: Dr. Jennifer Khoury & The DPRC

In this edition of Inspiring Action: The Impact of Research at MSVU, we look at Dr. Jennifer Khoury and the Developmental Psychobiology Research Centre. An assistant professor in the department of Psychology at MSVU, Dr. Jennifer Khoury holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies in Neuroscience. She is the director of the Developmental Psychobiology Research Centre (DPRC) at MSVU.

The overall goal of this research is to foster positive child neurobiological and psychosocial development.

Dr. Khoury and members of the DPRC seek to understand how early life experiences influence biological, psychological, and social development. "We examine the impact of early experiences on the brain and behaviour in both parents and children, beginning during the prenatal period and spanning to later childhood," she says, "This research combines different methods, including neuroimaging, biomarkers, family observation, and interviews." In what follows, we hear from Dr. Khoury on her experience with Research at MSVU.

Has there been any previous MSVU research that has influenced your work today?

Given that our research is multi-method and interdisciplinary, it is influenced by research across departments at MSVU, including work conducted in departments of Psychology (neuroimaging, EEG), Biology (hormones), Child and Youth Studies (child development), Family Studies & Gerontology (family systems), and Applied Human Nutrition (perinatal nutrition).

How do the MSVU Research themes of Impact and Access inform the way in which you conduct your research?

At the DPRC, we strive to produce research that directly impacts the wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities. We work to translate research findings in accessible ways, to promote knowledge and understanding in the research community and general public.

What have been the most impactful themes of your research?

The primary theme of this research is related to promoting the health and wellness of women, children and families. In addition, at the DPRC, we are committed to providing enriching learning opportunities to a diverse group of students and trainees at all stages of their education.

What would you tell your past research self, specifically in terms of EDIA & Truth & Reconciliation?

Collaborate with diverse researchers and those with lived experience, to learn about barriers that exist and ways to promote equity, diversity and inclusion in my research centre, in the type of research we conduct, and in the impact of that research.
